Persuasion – the ability to convince someone else to see things your way, and at some point in everyone’s life we all have to persuade somebody in order to get what we want. Interestingly enough, there were quite a number of cases in history where cultist leaders convince their followers that taking their own lives was the right thing to do. Take the example of self-styled prophet Jim Jones back in 1978, a cultist leader who somehow convinced over 900 of his cult members to commit suicide by poisoning themselves. To this day this tragedy is considered to be the largest mass suicide case in modern history.
When you look at those leaders and their followers, they often do seem perfectly sane, or are they?
Well maybe they weren’t exactly perfectly sane, but still the ability to influence people in such a manner is a feat not to be taken lightly. It is hard to imagine how someone can affect another so profoundly without believing in some sort of higher power at work.
